Artist's Description

Location: near Sunabe Seawall, by Kadena Air Base in Chatan, Okinawa, Japan

In Okinawa, you see pairs of shisa outside of almost every home or business. They are called the Guardian Lions of Okinawa...though they are sometimes referenced as "lion-dogs" too.

The open-mouthed shisa is the male who is meant to scare away evil spirits. The closed-mouth shisa, also in my collection, is supposed to keep good spirits in.

These can be hung as a pair near entrances of the home or office.
